American Civil Liberties Union Sues RI Health Department for Medical Marijuana Changes

This action took place after the decided to deny the ability for medical marijuana applications to be signed by and physician’s assistants.

In the lawsuit, ACLU accuses the Health Department of taking away physician’s assistants’ and nurse practitioners’ rights to approve medical marijuana patients without legislative approval or a .

Over 6,000 people in Rhode Island possess a medical marijuana recommendation. The Department of Health believes that making it harder to receive a recommendation will keep the medical marijuana system more legitimate and create less recreational users.

Many opposing the department’s decision believe that the new law is putting too much stress on patients,  and making it too hard for some people with illnesses to get a signature from a physician.

Medical marijuana patients that are already registered may continue to use medical marijuana until their cards expire. The future renewal must be authorized by a licensed physician.
